Moon Phase at Birth
The phase of the Moon at your birth shapes your emotional nature, your instinctive responses, and the quality of your inner life. Enter your date of birth to discover which of the eight lunar phases you were born under.
Phase boundaries are sub-day (e.g. New Moon to Waxing Crescent at ~1.85 days into the cycle), so the time of birth can change your result near a transition. Enter the time exactly as it appeared on the local clock at your birth location.
We use this to apply the correct timezone (including historical DST) so the phase is anchored to your birth instant, not your current location.
The Eight Phases of the Moon
The Moon's 29.5-day synodic cycle is divided into eight distinct phases, each carrying a distinct quality of energy. The New Moon marks the beginning of the cycle; the Full Moon its peak; and the returning crescent its completion. Each phase represents a different relationship between the Moon's light and shadow — between what is visible and what is hidden, what is growing and what is releasing.
This calculator uses the position of the Moon relative to a known reference point (the New Moon of January 6, 2000) to determine the phase on any given date. Results are accurate to within approximately one phase boundary for most dates between 1900 and 2100.
